Resources for Faculty:

Dear Faculty,

As you are revising your course syllabi for the upcoming semester, Sharon Harrison, Pam Cobrin, and I (the faculty members of the Honor Board) wanted to provide you with some suggestions regarding the inclusion of Barnard’s Honor Code in course materials. The Honor Code promotes honesty, ensures evenhanded treatment of all offenders, and makes it possible to take remedial action.

One way to encourage such honesty is to include a version of one of the following texts (or texts like them, or some combination of these) in course syllabi:

Honor code

The instructor values Barnard’s Honor Code for the integrity it fosters. Do your own work, and become familiar with the code.

Honor code

The instructor values Barnard’s Honor Code for the integrity it fosters. All exams and assignments in this class are to be completed in accordance with the Barnard Honor Code. Columbia students commit themselves to the Honor Code upon registering for a Barnard course. The codes says, in part:

“We consider it dishonest to ask for, give, or receive help in examinations or quizzes, to use any papers or books not authorized by the instructor in examinations, or to present oral work or written work that is not entirely our own, unless otherwise approved by the instructor. We consider it dishonest to remove without authorization, alter, or deface library and other academic materials.”
Honor code

Every student in registering at Barnard agrees to maintain the following Honor Code (established in 1912):

We, the students of Barnard College, resolve to uphold the honor of the College by refraining from every form of dishonesty in our academic life. We consider it dishonest to ask for, give, or receive help in examinations or quizzes, to use any papers or books not authorized by the instructor in examinations, or to present oral work or written work that is not entirely our own, unless otherwise approved by the instructor. We consider it dishonest to remove without authorization, alter, or deface library and other academic materials. We pledge to do all that is in our power to create a spirit of honesty and honor for its own sake.

Barnard students reaffirm their acceptance of the Honor Code each year by signing their registration forms. Columbia students commit themselves to the Honor Code upon registering for a Barnard course.

Take care,

Pam Cobrin, Sharon Harrison, & Eshkol Rafaeli
