proxy 1. a person authorized to act for another person, an agent or substitute 2. the authority to act for another 3. the written authorization to act in place of another.
The proxy is a cultural and artistic magazine that features different forms of writing and media pertaining specifically to the African Diaspora (North America, South America, Europe, and Africa) and is published once per semester. Owing much to our under-representation on campus, it is our mission to produce a magazine for Columbia University students of the African Diaspora that serves as an outlet for full artistic expression.
All affected by immigration, past or present, forced or intended, the youth of the African Diaspora encapsulate the influences of the past on the present and the reaction of these two forces when united. A product of many varying backgrounds, the current student of the Diaspora cannot be bottled nor defined but is better left observed.
This magazine serves as a social commentary through varying mediums of opinion editorials, short stories, poetry, visual art and reviews of current events. Apart from being intellectually stimulating, the proxy is aesthetically pleasing, lending each page to an artistic and thought filled layout while investing half of the magazine to showcase the visual art of the student contributors. The proxy is a venue in which all forms of expression are explored and where race, cultural background and all that this implies in America serves as the lens through which everything is seen.
the proxy is about acceptance. the proxy is about love. you don't have to be a part of the Diaspora to be a part of this club.
